Bringing solar energy to the North
As an ISO14001-certified company, KEMET was inspired to adopt solar power as part of its efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions. Environmental responsibility is embedded in the company’s daily operations, and steps toward greater sustainability are taken proactively. As a supplier of capacitors for solar panel systems, it was only natural for KEMET to begin utilizing solar energy itself.
Solarigo has been a reliable partner, and the project has gone smoothly in every respect.
Janne Kinnunen, Managing Director, Kemet Electronics Oy
The largest solar power plant in Kainuu
KEMET Electronics Oy’s electronics factory is in Suomussalmi, in the Kainuu region of Finland. Upon completion in 2022, the nearly 1,000-panel solar plant became the largest solar power plant in Kainuu. With a peak capacity of 331 kWp, it produces approximately 265 MWh of fully renewable electricity annually for the factory’s use, reducing CO₂ emissions by about 23,000 kilograms each year.
KEMET was first introduced to Solarigo through discussions with a representative of Lumme Energia. Solarigo’s service models proved attractive, and as the initial assessments and tendering process proceeded smoothly, Solarigo was chosen as the supplier of the solar plant. KEMET describes Solarigo as a reliable partner.
The construction project went well thanks to close cooperation between the factory and Solarigo staff. Practical matters such as scaffolding locations, crane schedules, and other site operations were agreed upon in advance, with project management handled by Solarigo. Although delivery delays in some components caused schedule challenges, these were communicated clearly and prepared well in advance at the factory.
The investment in solar energy has been well received by KEMET’s employees, who follow the plant’s daily production on a display screen at the factory. Customers, too, have shown interest in the solar initiative and in environmental responsibility more broadly.
Importantly, the KEMET solar plant is the first of its kind and sets a precedent within the international Yageo Group, pointing out the way for future sustainability initiatives.
