Solar power as a concrete sustainability action
Transitioning to fossil-free energy is a powerful and concrete sustainability action for Feelia. The company uses solar electricity generated by a 798 kWp ground-mounted solar power plant located at its production site, providing cost-effective electricity for ready-meal production. The solar power plant, delivered by Solarigo, became operational in February 2025.
Solar power is a cost-effective and completely fossil-free solution for us. We also chose solar because it operates silently. We looked at the decision from both a quality and sustainability perspective.
Jukka Ojala, CEO, Feelia
Customers value a responsible partner
The food industry has shown strong interest in finding ways to reduce emissions and move away from fossil fuels. Electrifying operations, switching to renewable fuels and increasing on-site fossil-free energy production are all important steps towards carbon neutrality.
For Feelia’s production facilities, achieving carbon neutrality means transitioning entirely to fossil-free energy. Feelia was already using fossil-free energy, and its own solar power plant complements this energy mix. Solar power now accounts for around 20% of the company’s electricity consumption.
Investing in its own solar power plant is a concrete sustainability action that also demonstrates to customers the continuous work Feelia is doing to support sustainable development.
“Sustainability work is extremely important today, as customers want to work with responsible partners. Of course, it is not something we do simply for image reasons – sustainability is important in its own right,” Ojala says.
On-site solar power is a cost-effective energy solution
Feelia’s production does not use ovens at all. Instead, the products are prepared in large autoclaves that can hold around 1,000 kg of food at a time. The food is cooked using steam generated by heating water, and the entire process runs on electricity.
Feelia’s other equipment, such as packaging machinery, also runs on electricity. Electrifying its operations has not presented any major challenges for the company.
“Introducing solar power lowers the company’s energy costs, which means the investment will pay for itself over time. On-site solar power is also cost-effective because no grid transmission fees are charged for the electricity produced and consumed on site,” Ojala says.
In the food industry, production processes are carefully planned, and even short interruptions can lead to waste. This makes a reliable electricity supply especially important. On-site solar power also helps strengthen the reliability and security of the company’s electricity supply.
Feelia is an innovative pioneer in ready-made meals, founded in Pyhäntä in 2007. Our mission is to make the food solutions of the future available to every professional kitchen today. At Feelia, we are passionate about building a better food future – bringing a better tomorrow to the plate today.
