Solar power project delivered with particular care and high-quality landscaping

Energy company Keravan Energia was among the first companies in Finland to adopt solar power in 2016. Following positive experiences with solar energy, the company wanted to expand its own solar power production and partnered with Solarigo to build a new solar power plant in Sipoo in 2025.

The planning and implementation of the Nikkilä solar power project required exceptional care and attention to detail, as the new solar power plant is located in a valuable cultural landscape near Sipoo Church. The project was completed in smooth cooperation with Solarigo, and Keravan Energia is already planning to further increase its solar power production.

Solar power plays a significant role in Keravan Energia’s electricity production

The Nikkilä solar power plant has a capacity of 1,123 kWp and an estimated annual production of 1,075 MWh. The plant reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 75 tonnes, equivalent to the amount absorbed by 16 hectares of Finnish forest or the emissions from producing 53,500 litres of milk. Currently Solar power accounts for just under one percent of Keravan Energia’s electricity production.

“Increasing our self-sufficiency in electricity production is one of the cornerstones of our strategy. It is important for our operations to have as diverse an energy production portfolio as possible, and solar power plays a significant role as part of that overall mix,” says Toni Nevalainen, Strategy Manager at Keravan Energia.

Increasing renewable energy production is another reason why Keravan Energia is investing in solar power. In addition, solar power is one of the few forms of electricity generation that the company can develop locally in its home region of Kerava and Sipoo. A suitable site for the solar power plant was found in Nikkilä on a vacant plot of land that the company had previously acquired.

Keravan Energia is also currently conducting a preliminary study for a project that would see a solar power plant approximately five times the size of the Nikkilä plant built on top of a closed landfill in Kerava.

A unique location with unique challenges

Solarigo was selected as the partner for the Nikkilä solar power project through a careful competitive tendering process. The solar power plant is located near Sipoo Church, making the site part of a valuable landscape. As a result, the design and implementation of the plant required particular attention to detail. In addition to price, the tendering criteria included specific quality requirements.

“For a project like this to succeed, good communication and cooperation between the client and the supplier are essential. This has worked extremely well with Solarigo. The location of the solar power plant is quite unique, which brought its own challenges, but they were resolved smoothly through close cooperation,” Nevalainen says.

Due to its location, particular attention was paid to the landscaping of the Nikkilä solar power plant, and the requirements for its construction were exceptionally high. In addition to being located near Sipoo Church, the plant occupies a prominent site alongside a busy road. Despite the demanding setting, all stakeholders have been pleased with the project.
