A major process requires a reliable supplier

Tokmanni has taken significant steps toward sustainability, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in its operations by 2025. Solarigo has been building solar power plants for Tokmanni stores since 2016. Today, more than 60 installations supply clean solar electricity to Tokmanni outlets. Over 9% of the company’s own electricity consumption is now generated directly from store rooftops. In selecting a solar supplier, Solarigo’s turnkey model stood out by offering Tokmanni a low-risk pathway to energy self-sufficiency.

We are very satisfied with Tokmanni’s solar energy program. The production profile of the solar plants matches our electricity consumption profile perfectly, as the stores use the most power during daytime hours.

A broad plan executed with ease and on schedule

The retail sector is highly competitive, and the battle for consumer attention increasingly emphasizes responsibility. As a listed company and Finland’s largest discount retailer, Tokmanni carries a significant environmental responsibility. One way to advance responsibility is not only to use renewable energy, but also to produce it in-house. Tokmanni chose Solarigo because it offered both renewable energy generation and energy self-sufficiency.

A large-scale plan requires a reliable partner. Solarigo’s model provides Tokmanni with low-risk energy independence on a turnkey basis. Solarigo builds solar plants on customer properties, minimizing the client’s own investments, while also handling maintenance throughout the system’s lifecycle. This enables Tokmanni to focus on its core business. Positive references from other customers encouraged Tokmanni to expand cooperation into a broad program. The initial goal of equipping 30 stores with solar plants by the end of 2021 was reached well ahead of schedule. A new goal of 50 stores was then set and achieved on time.

Tokmanni’s long-term objective, in line with its growth strategy, is to install a solar power plant on every new store rooftop, provided the structures allow it. “The production profile of solar plants fits excellently with Tokmanni’s electricity consumption profile, as the stores consume most energy during daytime. Modern solar plants perform well even in Finnish conditions,” explains Harri Koponen.

Nearly half of summer energy needs from solar

The benefits have been clear since 2019. Based on experience, the systems installed have proven to be of high quality, and cooperation with Solarigo has been smooth. With Solarigo’s expertise, Tokmanni has been able to cover nearly half of store electricity consumption with solar power during the best summer months — a result that has both surprised and delighted the company, alongside the low cost of solar power.

In Tokmanni’s experience, the benefits of solar power plants are already at a high level. Cooperation with Solarigo has positioned Tokmanni at the forefront of responsible and renewable energy adoption. Solar power is worth seizing now, as the transition is both easy and cost-efficient.
