Solarigo’s expertise made the difference

Cargotec chose Solarigo as its partner thanks to customer-oriented service and the solar plant as a service model. Solarigo delivered a solar power plant larger than any of Cargotec’s previous projects, and despite demanding safety measures, installation was carried out smoothly. It has been encouraging to see that for such a major company, environmental values and sustainable development are an important part of its strategy.

Partnership built on thorough negotiations

The cooperation between Cargotec and Solarigo began with extensive negotiations. Cargotec’s contract negotiators were quality-conscious and precise about technical details. The installation site also made the construction phase more challenging due to stricter-than-usual safety requirements.

For Cargotec, it was important to review Solarigo’s earlier customer references for benchmarking. Although the negotiations were lengthy, the process was rewarding for both parties. Impressed by customer references, Cargotec decided on Solarigo’s larger-scale implementation with a 360 kW system. Solarigo began the design work based on the customer’s needs, first analyzing technical data such as electricity consumption, safety instructions affecting installation, and the overall investment costs.

As an international company, Cargotec also required materials and instructions in English — an important factor for increasing employee competence and supporting safety procedures. Cargotec itself provided safety training for the installation staff, which further strengthened the cooperation.

Sustainability at the core

By adopting solar power, Cargotec aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its operations. According to its sustainability targets, 50% of the company’s electricity consumption in 2021 should come from renewable energy sources. Achieving this requires long-term investments with high reliability.

Solarigo’s effortless service model supports this well, as the company not only installs solar power plants but also maintains them properly throughout their lifecycle. The approximately 1,300 solar panels installed at Cargotec’s Tampere site provide an annual electricity production of 260 MWh — covering 11% of the site’s total electricity consumption.

Cargotec’s leading cargo and load handling solutions bring intelligence to cargo flows and make everyday life smoother. Its business areas — Kalmar, Hiab, and MacGregor — are industry forerunners. Their unique position in ports, at sea, and on roads ensures the optimization of global cargo flows, creating sustainable value for customers. In 2019, Cargotec’s revenue was approximately EUR 3.7 billion, and the company employed around 12,500 people.
