Aiming for a greener shopping center
In 2016, Iso Omena became a shopping center powered in part by renewable solar energy. The mall’s elevators and escalators are powered by electricity generated by its own solar plant, and customers can even charge their phones at a solar-powered charging station. For Citycon, which operates the shopping center, cooperation with Solarigo has been effortless, and the technically advanced system ensures durability and tangible benefits for both the shopping center and its tenants.
Citycon was one of Solarigo’s first major customers after the company was founded in 2015 — a collaboration that required mutual trust. Citycon chose Solarigo primarily because of the sales team’s expertise and professionalism; Solarigo clearly knew what it was talking about. This marked the beginning of a long-term cooperation aimed at designing a greener shopping center.
At the core: the customer
Citycon adopted renewable energy as part of its sustainability program. Responsibility and ecological values are highly important to customers — studies show that as many as 89% of Finns want solar power*. This demonstrates that renewable energy is a particularly important value for Finnish consumers, which is why the use of solar power is actively communicated to visitors. For customers, ecology is more than just words: solar energy provides direct benefits, such as cooling during the summer months.
Solarigo’s solar plant will generate emission-free electricity for up to 35 years, making it crucial that cooperation with the installer and service provider works seamlessly. Citycon’s trust in Solarigo is further demonstrated by the fact that Lappeenranta’s IsoKristiina shopping center also received its own solar plant, with another installation underway for Columbus in Vuosaari.
Choosing the right supplier is crucial
Citycon appreciates Solarigo’s readiness and the durability of its systems, as these factors greatly impact the profitability of the investment. Solarigo’s maintenance services keep the solar power system in top condition, ensuring optimal operation for decades to come. With 2,000 solar panels at Iso Omena generating the equivalent electricity consumption of 230 apartments annually, service and maintenance must be both high-quality and efficient.
The installation process came with its challenges — structural requirements, architectural demands, and neighboring residential buildings all added complexity — but Solarigo successfully managed the demanding project.
The adoption of solar power has also been reflected positively in Citycon’s certifications. Iso Omena’s extension has received the highest possible LEED Platinum environmental certification, and in 2019 the shopping center achieved top scores in the Breeam In Use assessment. Renewable energy adoption has accelerated Citycon’s progress in creating an environmentally friendly shopping center. All of this adds transparency to Citycon’s operations and helps customers make environmentally conscious choices even during everyday shopping trips.
