Finland’s first solar park on a mining site completed in Pyhäjärvi

The Callio Solar Park in Pyhäjärvi, with a total capacity of 13 MWp, has been completed and began commercial electricity production in June 2025. Built on the reclaimed tailings ponds of the former Pyhäsalmi mine, the project demonstrates how former industrial areas can be transformed into productive renewable energy sites.
The unique characteristics of the ore-sand basin required tailored design and engineering solutions. Instead of conventional foundations, the solar structures are mounted using a floating foundation system that incorporates recycled railway piles sourced from VR.
Comprising 22,800 solar panels, the park is expected to generate approximately 10 GWh of electricity annually. The project was developed jointly by Solarigo Systems Oy and Skarta Energy, in collaboration with the City of Pyhäjärvi, Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy, and the Callio Energy Park initiative. It has received financial support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment through the Next Generation EU recovery programme.
The solar park is owned by Callio-Hitura Solarpark Oy, which also holds rights to a planned solar power project at the Hitura mine in Nivala, currently progressing through the permitting phase.
