ISKU's goal has been to reduce the carbon footprint in accordance with the state's goals. With Lahti becoming the climate capital of Europe in 2021, ISKU made a decision to acquire a solar power plant. As a result, a 2.8 MWp solar park was commissioned in Lahti in connection with ISKU's production facilities and ISKU Center in 2021-2022.

ISKU'S SOLAR ENERGY SOLUTION

After ISKU's numerous energy efficiency measures, the next step was to add solar power to Lahti properties. After the discussions between ISKU and Solarigo started, the first thought was a wall-mounted solar power plant. It was soon concluded that the factory property and the ISKU Center still had a significant electricity use potential, for which a solar power plant larger than a wall installation would be suitable.

"Then I realized that here, between the factories, we have land areas for a wider implementation. Fortunately, there was a partner in the discussions who stated that these things have been done before, so let's do it," ISKU finance and real estate director Asko Dahlbom sheds light on the initial stages of the project.

Soon, the implementation of approximately 6,000 solar panels was put on the desktop. The size of the solar power plant was determined from an optimization point of view, so that 2 fields were directed to produce electricity for the ISKU factory and 1 field for the ISKU Center. The power plants were sized in such a way that they produce practically all daytime consumption for the properties from April to September.

SMOOTH IMPLEMENTATION

The solar power plant project started at the beginning of 2021 with preliminary planning, specification of installation locations and the normal approval process. There were many things to consider in the area, such as the train track next to the power plant area, underground gas lines and heating water flow, city zoning of the area and consultation with the neighbors. The cooperation with the authorities and other parties went well, and through Solarigo they received answers about how different things had been successfully implemented in solar power fields of a similar size in the past.

In the land transfer and electrical installation of the solar power plant, local operators were used who knew ISKU's properties from the past. With this, Solarigo's solar power know-how and the utilization of locality were successfully combined in the installation phase of the project. The agreement was signed in the middle of 2021, the first field was switched on in same year's December and the remaining power plants in the summer of 2022.

"The project management was done professionally by Solarigo, and the project manager was often on site himself. There was no need to wait for anything, we always knew what was going on and what we needed to do to further advance the project. The logistics were coordinated sometimes even on a daily basis, so that ISKU's own operations were not disturbed by the project ", says Dahlbom .

THE SOLAR POWER PLANT WAS OPENED FOR A CELEBRATION

ISKU organized an opening ceremony of the solar power plant for its invited guests and the press in the fall of 2022. The opening of the solar power plant was attended by representatives of the media, City of Lahti Mayor Pekka Timonen, Head of Office Juhani Damski, Minister Ville Skinnari and guests invited by ISKU and Solarigo. Solarigo was at the event to present the solar power plant and solar electricity in general. Due to the event, ISKU received attention in the local news of the Lahti region and nationally, for example in YLE Areena.

We have followed the government's carbon neutrality goals and guidelines. In order to achieve the goals, we need companies that make practical implementations. This is exactly what we did with Solarigo.
