What is solar energy?

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY

Solar energy is a clean and emission-free form of energy produced with the help of sunlight. The sun is an eternal and unlimited source of energy, because the energy radiated by the sun on the earth's surface is easily enough to cover the energy needs of all of humanity.

How is solar energy produced and utilized?

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY

Solar energy is produced in solar panels, where light rays are converted into electricity. The production of solar energy is based on the amount of light, not the heat produced by the sun's rays. When the sun's rays hit the solar panel, a reaction occurs in the cells in the panel, which is called the photoelectric phenomenon.

In practice, a photon, or light particle, disappears into the surface (solar panel) and releases its energy forward. The electricity generated in the panels is converted to be suitable for mains electricity and fed to the property's electricity center, after which the solar electricity can be used like normal mains electricity.

A solar power plant is a system consisting of solar panels and components that can be connected to the mains, which produces 100% emission-free electricity. Solar energy is mainly produced for the property's own use, and surplus electricity is sold to the electricity grid. Solar power plants work alongside the grid, so the electricity does not go out even if the sun is not shining. The solar power plant can be installed, for example, on the roof, ground or wall. Typically, the solar power plant covers approx. 10–20% of the property's electricity use per year. The rest of the electricity is bought from the electricity grid as usual.

Does the sun shine enough in Finland?

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY

Yes, it shines! This is a question that is often pondered due to the cold conditions and long winters in the north. However, solar energy in Finland is profitable thanks to surprisingly high radiation values, long summer days and clean air! The local climate in Finland is favorable for the production of solar electricity. For example, the annual amount of radiation in southern Finland and northern Germany fluctuates in the same values.

The solar panel is able to convert approximately 17–22% of the sun's radiation energy into electricity. In Finland, the value of the peak radiation is at its highest around 1000 W/m2, so under optimal conditions, one square meter provides 170–200 W of electricity.
